Best Flip Camera So Far…4
I have been a Flip camera user since they released the first gen. Flip Mino HD (not the new metallic model). I loved the camera. For what I needed it for it was everything I wanted. However like ever product not everyone is going to love it one hundred percent. I did find a few faults with the my Mino HD.

#1 – I thought the camera was a little to small and felt very flimsy in my hand. My hand shaking seemed to be amplified by the very small flimsy feeling camera in my hand.

#2 – The touch sensitive controls were not that sensitive and pressing the controls caused the camera to shake and jerk.

But for the most part loved the sound and thought the picture was great.

Soon the Flip Ultra HD came out and I had to have it. Selling points on this camera were more storage space, no touch sensitive controls, and it was bigger and felt much more durable in the hand. But just like the Mino I did have some complaints.

#1 – The rechargable batteries sucked and when I tried to recharge them my camera kept getting hot, causing it to shut down or stop charging.

#2 – The microphone on the camera I thought was not as good as the Mino. Me being a band director I find that at times it distorts when filming my drumlines and band playing, but it was only on initial loud hits and pops.

Other than that I loved this camera and I use this one most of the time. This one has a wider shot then the Mino. It doesn’t have touch sensitive controls making zooming much smoother. The camera is much larger and when my hand shakes the camera (video) tends not to.

Recently Cisco came out with the Flip Slide HD and once again I had to have it. I bought it the day it came out and took it to WGI World Percussion Championships in Dayton Ohio for some testing.

At first I was a little skeptical about the touch screen since I was not a fan of the Mino HD’s touch sensitive controls. I was not to worried about the size since I think the bigger the size the more control you have and the less shaky your footage will be.

I think this shoots the best footage of all Flip Cameras. It is crystal clear. I was real surprised by the touch screen. It is not as sensitive as I thought it was going to be. Actually it is like if I was using my Flip Ultra HD. I love the feel in the hand. I am not real picky about the Slide out screen. I think that it is a great idea/feature and used it a few times this past weekend. The slide bar is a little confusing at first but you do get the hang of it. Its really not that big of a deal, but some people find this frustrating and give the camera a poor rating. I don’t understand that. I love that they put a headphone jack on the camera. In the past two models I felt that the video got very pixelated when the camera was zoomed. I don’t see that as much with the Flip Slide Hd. The video stays pretty clear when zooming.

I have only one issue with the camera. The Flip Slide HD has an omnidirectional microphone which is great (I am pretty sure the others use a unidirectional microphone), but it is really sensitive. Being close to my drumline at World Championships caused the camera to distort big time (inaudible at times). When I moved back away from them it got better (moved back like 15 – 20 yards). I am hoping that this will get fixed maybe in a firmware update or something like this.

I do have to say that I am a little upset with Cisco. I thought the new Flip camera would at least have image stabilization and the so much talked about WiFi capabilities, but no such luck. This however will not turn me away from my beloved Flip Cameras.

I have used a number of other HD Cameras such as the Kodak Zi8, and I prefer the Flip.

In my opinion
Flip Mino HD – Best Microphone
Flip Ultra HD – Widest Angle for shooting, feels the best in the hand
Flip Slide HD – Best Video Quality

Thanks
Nick

Love at first Flip5
This is my first video camera of any kind, and I am totally in love. I’m a bit technologically challenged, and so was pleasantly surprised to discover that the “set up” of this camera was easier than setting the time on my sports watch, and consisted only of scrolling through the date and time. Within thirty seconds of turning on the camera, I was ready to begin shooting my first movie clip. Unlike the digital point-and-shoot cameras I have owned, the menu and functions on this camera are completely intuitive. In no time at all, I had figured out how to start, stop, delete, replay, and scroll through my first few movie clips. I also needed no direction to view and maneuver the clips in wide-screen playback mode, and could therefore offer instant gratification to my children, who eagerly awaited the opportunity to see and hear themselves on film. Transferring the files to my computer was equally self-explanatory: within a minute or two of plugging the camera into a USB port, the software was installed, and I had named, saved, and emailed myself my favorite of the movie clips I’d just created. The image quality was excellent, even on the full screen of my computer display.

If I had to identify any drawbacks to this camera, I would say that the somewhat limited zoom range makes close-up shots of moving images (like my children) a bit challenging at first, and that you need a somewhat steady hand to avoid creating bumpy images. However, after only a few practice runs, I found that I was able to minimize these issues to my satisfaction. Overall, the ease of use, crisp images, and user-friendliness of this camera make it an absolute asset for any number of different contexts. I couldn’t be more pleased.

A Great Camera, One of the Best5
You can think of this camera as the “Flip Phone” version of a Flip Camera. That is to say, it’s better than a regular flip in almost every way. It has the same interface you know and love displayed on a huge LCD, and then flips open for full-screen playback. The full-screen playback has some cool features like the ability to seek to anywhere in your clip with just a single touch of the screen. I have never seen a camera with this feature and it’s amazing. I guess it wouldn’t really work on a camera without a touchscreen, and it works perfectly here.

Overall it’s a great camera and an obvious evolution from the Flip of old. Congrats Flip, you’ve done it again.

Customer Reviews:

Affordable and necessary5
If you buy a camera, you should have a bag.
You need a place for lenses, batteries, cards (and cords), and other things.
I really didn’t want to get a small cheap bag that would hardly hold my camera but the bigger ones are expensive.
This bag is not only roomy but it fit everything I had.
The price is very affordable and reasonable.
The quality is amazing.
If I bought another bag, for whatever reason, I’d get another one of these.

Very good value!5
This bag is actually a very good value. It looks to be thoughtfully constructed, i like that it has the main contents under a zip and its got a flap all around the outside of the bag to cover the zip tracks. However, when trying to unzip the flap can get in the way so you’ll have to fold it up, a minor annoyance. Samsonite claims that the bag is water-resistant but i haven’t experimented with that.

It’s wide enough for my DSLR with lens attached if the camera is placed on it’s side. I don’t have another lens yet so i like this setup, but if you have lenses the length of a typical 18mm-55mm lens then you can probably stack 2 lenses on top of each other and put the camera body (positioned normally) in the main compartment.

3 exterior pockets and one zip pocket inside the main compartment are more than sufficient. The cleaning kit is nice, i like that it comes with a cloth. The tripod is very very small, it’s a little shaky at supporting my DSLR and i don’t want to risk it toppling. The legs are bendable so you can angle it but it might topple with the weight of the camera. Id say it’s only use would be to put it on a table while you still give the camera some support. Still prety usable though.

Decent product for its price5
Well, it’s a good bag, and $15 makes this a good deal. However, I think this bag should be used for non-DSLR only. I have a XTi with 3 lenses (18-55mm, Sigma 70-300mm, and m42 50mm )and I can’t stuff all of them in this bag :( . Ended up having to buy the XTi starter kit.

Easy to use. Image clarity good but not great. Zoom & focus are okay. Sucks in low light.3
EASY TO USE:
If you spend 10-minutes fooling around with the menu and all the buttons, you get the hang of it really quick. I will probably never use the advanced manual functions, but from the look of it manual function menus they seem easy to operate. I would, for this price, expect that there’d be a manual focus ring rather than a screen-based tool for manual focus. The buttons that you use the most like the zoom control, record button, and snapshot button, are in the right places. The camera overall is heavier than a SD camera but not bad at all. It feels sturdy and the battery doesn’t add noticable heft to the device. Connecting to the TV with an HDMI cable is easy because it uses a real, full-size HDMI port and automatically activates it when you plug it in. This might be common to all camcorders, but you can use an HDMI hi-def TV as a huge viewfinder if you want… which potentially could be useful.

IMAGE CLARITY:
This is an HD camera, so naturally I expect the image quality to be very, very good. It is crisp but I feel as if it is a little bit grainy, especially in low light. I was not impressed by it at all and I’m highly considering returning it. The 3CCD system is supposed to reproduce the best colors but I felt as if reds and blues were muted – of course I’m no color theory-trained person. The first few times I used this were during a snow storm to record the beating we were getting here in Minneapolis and at an ice-skating rink. Not the two biggest color-rich environments but still I saw colors and details that the camera screen didn’t see and to me, for an HD 3CCD camera, I feel it should have.

ZOOM & FOCUS:
The optical zoom operates at the right speed I’d say. The camera focuses fairly quickly, though I question why it doesn’t go any faster. The big problem is, when you get passed approx. 6x it starts to lose its ability to focus up-close. So say you are sitting at your desk that is against a wall and you want to zoon in on the face of the person in the artwork on that wall. You zoom, zoom, zoom all the way to 10x which gets you close enough to fill the entire screen with the person’s little face in the artwork. But it’s blurry. The camera actually automatically backs-out the zoom until it is able to focus. I find that ridiculous. I zoomed in that far because I wanted to see the face of the person in the artwork fill the entire screen from the distance at which I was holding the camera. If you move the camera closer manually, it does a better job but is still obviously limited. I was dissapointed here.

LOW LIGHT:
I’m not expecting greatness in low light. I realize that top movie cameras even need lighting to capture people properly at light. But while at the ice skating rink, they turned the lights down low for that romantic feel (I suppose) and all of a sudden everyone’s face disappeared and colors significantly reduced. It wasn’t dark, it was amber-like; there was actually quite a bit of light remaining. I tried the night-mode which immediately increased the camera’s ability to see light to where I think it should have been able to do w/out a setting but it became choppy and lost all use – the shutter speed slowed. Why in the world would I want the shutter speed to slow so much that the filming looks like I’m making a slasher movie – all choppy and traily. The only use of it is to plant the camera on a tripod and make people walk very slowly. It doesn’t have that green-looking night-vision mode like Sonys do, which, even though its not in prestine color, allows you to see things happening at night, which is the point. The only time it does “well” at night is when there is a light bulb in the area and it picks up the light well from that for a certain distance away from the light source. Then it just sort of reverts back to its dismal low-light capability around the edges. I was dissapointed here.

Picture quality, focus, and low-light ability are like the kitchen and bathroom of a house. You can have just okay features otherwise, but if these features aren’t great, you just don’t have a good camera. I don’t consider these features to be great, especially for a camera with an MSRP of over $1,000. I got it for $830 for Marcus Audio through Amazon.com. I think I’d be willing to pay $700 for it as it is.

I’ll update you if I decide to return it (and let you know if Marcus Audio is a pain in the butt to return a product to). I need to see if the Sony or other brands are any better. I need something that is good in low light. I don’t need the best colors at low-light, but I need to see faces. Problem is, trying to test these things without a salesperson looming over you at Best Buy or Circuit City is a pain because they never have power, they are usually screwed up because some kid took a billion pictures or videos with it and hit a bunch of buttons, or they are attached to an alarm system that keeps going off. Annoying. Hence my love of Amazon.com.

Excellent digital camera/camcorder!!4
I love this camera!! It’s very simple to use and has many features to support most video/photo adjustments the average person would want to make to take a great shot. My wife likes it and she’s not particularly tech-savvy. I’m a software developer so I tend to do well with technology.

I was drawn to the camera because of the HDD digital storage and it seemed to be high quality when compared with others that I experimented with in it’s class without being bulky, or having an awkward or complicated user interface. Once I discovered this unit at my favorite technology retail store, I did a lot of research on the device – its features and usability, and tried to find it’s weaknesses from any professional review I could locate. I did all my searching on the Internet. What I found was that nearly all the reviews were raving when compared with others (it was a leader in major publishers). The weakness that was pointed out by only a few reviews was that it seems to have an ever so slight difficulty managing orange toned colors. Particularly in bad lighting. This was an acceptable downside to me considering how well it outperformed many other areas in autofocus, zoom, anti-wobble (stabilization for shaky hands), shutter speed, backlighting, flash (with anti-red-eye), color accuracy (despite the orange issue), viewfinder, user interface, digital storage speed, and quality of resulting video. The photography aspect doesn’t come lacking either. However, the orange issue applies also to stills. BTW, (reviewer note) this is more apparent to me since the interior of my house is painted with earth tones. The camera doesn’t have any trouble at all in natural (outdoor) lighting.

The camera’s hard drive also has a shock-proof feature to protect the hard drive in a fall, an input jack for an optional external microphone, 10x/40x/300x zoom, and several other features. Another professional review was displeased with the built in microphone (I haven’t noticed this problem). But that’s certainly eliminated with the optional external microphone and mount-point. Another great usability feature is that the most common scene capture adjustments you would want to make can be set from a mini on-screen popup menu, the more uncommonly used adjustments are made via the main menu. The popup menu can be accessed and adjusted during video recording (which would also be noticed on the resulting video).

One downside I have encountered is that the file output is not a common output format (perhaps it is to support higher quality video recordings). MOD is this file format. I don’t know what that is so I end up converting all my movies to MPG. If I didn’t have a way to record a script on my computer this batch conversion process would have been very frustrating and time consuming.

The user manual was straight-forward and thorough. I read the whole thing in a few sittings when I bought it and have been very glad I did. I couldn’t have gotten up to speed with it nearly so fast. Firstly, the user interface has very few controls, very few buttons. That’s what I wanted, but it meant that I would have to learn to navigate the menus in order to know where to find what I wanted to execute it quickly in live action. The manual certainly met my needs in that area. So there is a learning curve. It’s been 15 months (birth of our first-born) since I bought it and I’ll be returning to the manual for a refresher on those infrequently used features which could be helping me and I’ve simply forgotten.

Overall, the camera is easy to adjust and get into the action quickly. I personnally dislike having to make a party wait for the camera man to adjust his (complicated) camera. I didn’t want to be that camera man. This camera has been an excellent fit.

I know the 3CCD is a major innovation but I don’t remember much about it – but it takes great videos and pictures. I certainly recommend it, but I
can’t give it 5 stars for the orange tone management. Probably a 4.5!!

Easy to use4
Bought the camera 1 month ago from Amazon. Easy to use and download software (I’m not a techi). I needed to spend some time to get used to the editing software with the camera, but now I can use most basic functions. Microphone can pick up any adjustments you make to the camera while filming, so just try to use adjustments sparingly. Excellent HD camera for the price. Happy with the purchase and will probably upgrade camera with microphone to help pick up speeches etc…

Customer Reviews:

This digital camera should have been so much better.3
This camera is poorly designed.

1. with the view finder and lens on the left side (when viewed from the back) it is nothing uncommon to pick up the camera and place your fingers on the view finder or lens.

2. the software to view the pictures in memory will only show thumbnail images, making it difficult to select the best quality pictires to send to the computer.

3. the Arcsoft software that is used to view the pictures full screen or save to disk as a .JPG or other formats is no better than the software to transfer the pictures to the computer. You can view the picture about 50% normal size, but if you want to view it full screen then save it to disk, you have to expand the picture. click the mouse to go back to the software then click save before you can save the image.

3. This camera only has two modes.

a. 320×200 (if memory serves) ( was able to take 167 photos in this mode before filling up the memory.

b. 640×480 I was able to take 51 photos in this mode before filling up the memory.

3. this camera does not allow you to see the pictures before connecting it to the computer at all.

4. this camera does not offer a zoom feature at all.

5. there is no way to add additional memory.

This camera DOES have some good features.

1. the USB port to transfer the pictures to the computer is quick.

2. this camera has MANY different modes of operation.

a. take photos when it is sunny, overcast, inside a well lighted room, inside a darker room.

b. DOES have a built in strobe, so you can take photos just about any time. The two Pencam digital cameras I looked at did not have a strobe at all, and this camera was less expensive than both of those.

c. Take one photo after another (about every 1/2 a second)

d. Auto timer so you can get in the photo too.

e. This camera uses two AA batteries that can be bought almost anyhere.

If you want a point and shoot camera, or want to use pictures in auctions this camera will serve you well.

If you want the ability to zoom in, take pictures of higher resolution, or see what you are going to get before plugging in the USB port, then view the better quality digital cameras such as the Canon, Minolta, or Olympus offerings (I picked these brands because I have had success with these brands of 35 mm cameras, and I know the optics are good.

No Brainer5
Cheap. Simple. Works the first time.
I’ve never been a gadget kind of person, and have never had a digital camera. I checked several search engines and had simple criteria: cheap, USB-software included, and flash.
This unit was priced way below others that met that criteria (mainly the flash), and looked solid when I checked the details.
I wanted pictures just for email and a website, so the image quality this produces is just fine for me. You want higher-quality, printable photos, and you’ll pay more.
I was pleasantly surprised by this unit: I pulled it out of the box, put the batteries in (these are included), read the manual (how to set it to auto-flash?), loaded the software, and was off and running. 2 minutes later I emailed a picture of my cat Mango to my daughter. No brainer!

What a great buy!5
I bought this for my mother as a birthday gift. Considering the price, I was not expecting much. There were many things I liked about this camera.

1. The pictures are crisp and clear, much higher resolution and clarity than I initially expected.

2. The software is easy and simple to install.

3. It comes with everything you need (carrying case, batteries etc..)

4. It records video!

I have not tried to “video recording” feature yet. But to have all these features in such a low priced camera is amazing. I am going to purchase one for myself.

From the Manufacturer
Vivitar’s Vivicam is a tri-mode digital still/PC camera, offering an affordable choice for photographers who desire one device for digital images, video-clip capability, and web-based video use. The Vivicam 10 features compact, streamline, high-impact styling. With 8MB of internal memory, the Vivicam 10 can store up to 70 images at VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels)–excellent for entry-level digital photography, school reports, email, or Web page use.

The image quality of the Vivicam 10 is outstanding for cameras in this price and resolution class. Users can easily download images through a USB port for viewing or editing with the supplied Arcsoft software.

Other features include macro-mode, auto flash, and an automatic power saving logic. Based upon CMOS imaging technology and automatic power saving features, the V10 and 20 can capture hundreds of images, using only two AA alkaline batteries. While connected to a PC the camera draws power from the USB bus, thereby extending battery life even further.

The Vivicam 10 has a tripod socket and self-timer. It includes a small swivel-tripod that is ideal for portraiture and web-video use. A soft carrying pouch is also included for portability on one’s belt.

The video-clip capability of the Vivicam 10 is a truly amazing feature for an entry-level digital camera in this price range. The video clip function allows users to capture sequential CIF images (320 x 240 resolution) at a rate of approximately three frames per second. (The camera does not need to be tethered to a PC.) The number of images is limited to available memory. In 8 MB, the Vivicam 10 can capture 200 to 300 sequential CIF frames. Returning back to the home PC, the user can convert those sequential CIF frames into a movie (AVI format) video using a special application software, known as AVI Maker, which is included with the camera.

AVI Maker includes the ability to accelerate the frame rate of the video sequence to rates of 15 or even 30 fps. AVI movies may be emailed, or further converted to streaming video formats for web use using third-party software (not included). This is a powerful feature for such an affordable digital camera.

The Vivicam 10 is compatible with Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP.
